Herm Island Local Post / Carriage Labels Many islands around the coast of the United Kingdom and Ireland have issued their own Local Post stamps, often referred to as Carriage Labels. Some of the stamps actually served to deliver mail, if only ceremonially, while others are purely speculative issues created for sale to stamp collectors.
Herm Island is part of the Channel Islands Group.According to Wikipedia:
Herm(Guernésiais:Haerme, ultimately fromOld Norsearms "arm", due to the shape of the island, or Old French eremite "hermit") is one of theChannel Islandsand part of theParish of St Peter Portin theBailiwick of Guernsey. It is located in theEnglish Channel, north-west of France and south of England. It is 2.183km (1.356mi) long and under 873 metres (2,864ft) wide; oriented north–south, with several stretches of sand along its northern coast. The much larger island ofGuernseylies to the west,Jerseylies to the south-east, and the smaller island ofJethouis just off the south-west coast.
Herm was first discovered in theMesolithicperiod, and the first settlers arrived in theNeolithicandBronzeAges. Many tombs from that period remain today, the majority in the north of the island. The island was annexed to theDuchy of Normandyin 933, but returned to the English Crown with the division of Normandy in 1204. It was occupied by Germany in the Second World War and the scene ofOperation Huckaback, but was largely bypassed. Herm is currently managed by Herm Island Ltd, formed by Starboard Settlement, who acquired Herm in 2008, following fears during the sale of the island that the identity of the island was at threat.
Herms harbour is on its west coast. There are several buildings of note in the vicinity including theWhite House, St Tuguals Chapel, Fishermans Cottage, "The Mermaid" pub and restaurant, and a small primary school with about eight children. During a busy summer season up to 100,000 tourists visit the island, arriving by one of thecatamaranferries operated by theTrident Charter Company.Cars are bannedfrom the island, as are bicycles;quad bikesandtractorsused for staff and luggage transport respectively are allowed. Herm issued its first stamps in 1939. This set was issued on September 18, 1961, by overprinting a special printing of the 1959 "Map and Boat" issue. The overprints, in two lines, by Harrison & Sons, read "Europa 18.9.61" or "Europa 18 Sept 1961". This set is listed inthe"Backman & Forester 1989 Catalogue" as # 71 - 76.

After 35+ years I decided to retire from being an active Cinderella Stamp dealer. Most of my working inventory plus backup stock was sold at public auction. However, I have retained some material that I will be offering for sale. In addition, I have some "new" material that was mixed into lots I have bought for my own collections. I will be listing some of the material in my eBay store at fixed prices.I will also be offering some material at auction, either as single items or mixed lots. There will be many bargains available. There will be large and small lots, some containing similar material, some containing a random mixture, and some containing only one or a few items. The condition will be mixed, but none of the lots will be just accumulations of damaged or faulty stamps (unless specifically listed as such).
Items in stockpage or larger lots may be removed and repackaged into glassines to save on shipping costs.
A Note about Poster Stamps and Gum: Because many poster stamp collectors are primarily interested in the image on the stamp, the absence or presence of gum on the back is of little concern. If no mention of gum is made, then there may or may not be gum present. If you are only interested in poster stamps with original gum, please inquire before bidding. Actual condition issues (that are not apparent from the scan) WILL be described.
* A Note about "Stock Images": Occasionally I will have more than one example of an item in inventory. Rather than scan each one individually, I may use the same image for multiple examples of the item. If that is the case, the item supplied will be in substantially the same, or better, condition than the image. Any such items will have the words: "STOCK IMAGE" at the end of the description.
