DESCRIPTION

The first Foulis edition of Masons poetry.

Robert and Andrew Foulis were brothers who worked in partnership as printers to the University of Glasgow. The brothers dominated the Glasgow book trade and held an international reputation for their editions of the classics. The majority of their books were intended for scholars however some were produced specifically for collectors of select works.

William Mason was ordained in 1754 and held a number of posts in the church. His 1747 poem Musaeus, a monody on the Death of Mr Pope went through several editions and was very well received. His two historical tragedies Elfrida and Caractacus were used in translation as libretti for 18th Century operas.

Volume I contains his Musaeus, his Odes, his Elegies, Epitaphs and Dramatic Poems. Volumes II starts with his Caractacus, followed by his letters and illustrations of Caractacus.
