This exquisite set of 30 Wajima lacquerware small plates features the classic pine, bamboo, and plum motif (Shochikubai) alongside beautifully rendered bird designs, including cranes, sparrows, and nightingales, all crafted in gold Maki-e on a rich red lacquer base. In Japanese culture, Shochikubai represents endurance, prosperity, and celebration, while each bird carries its own symbolism—the crane for longevity, the sparrow for happiness, and the nightingale for good fortune.
The intricate gold detailing contrasts elegantly with the deep red lacquer, highlighting the exceptional craftsmanship of Wajima artisans from the Meiji to Taisho period.
